William Shatner and his daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, faced a challenging journey together after being diagnosed with advanced cancer within months of each other. The 95-year-old actor, famous for his role as Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek,” revealed his battle with Stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain in June 2023. Around the same time, Gretsch, aged 61, found a lump in her breast, leading to her own cancer diagnosis.
During their treatments, Gretsch recalled seeking comfort from her father, who reassured her that this would just be a temporary setback in her life. Shatner himself remained composed upon receiving his cancer diagnosis, expressing gratitude for catching it early enough to treat successfully. Fortunately, both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recoveries to the care of skilled medical professionals.
Gretsch underwent extensive chemo, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy treatments, while Shatner had surgery to remove a tumor on his face and underwent two years of immunotherapy for his lung and brain cancer. The shared experience has deepened their appreciation for life’s simple joys, with Shatner reflecting on the beauty of everyday moments like watching a hummingbird or playing with his dog and children.
Despite attempts to reach out for comment, CBC News did not receive a response from Shatner before the publication deadline.
