The NHL’s Heritage Classic is set to make a return to Winnipeg next year, with local sports enthusiasts, including a former Jets goalie, anticipating that the outdoor hockey spectacle will bring significant positive attention to the city.
In an announcement on Saturday, the league revealed that Princess Auto Stadium will be transformed into an outdoor rink on Oct. 25, 2026, for a matchup between the Winnipeg Jets and the Montreal Canadiens in the upcoming Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic.
Reflecting on their experience at the previous hometown Heritage Classic in 2016, Dan and Leanne Carlson mentioned attending the alumni game. While the Jets faced a 3-0 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers in the main event that year, the alumni game witnessed former Jets players securing a 6-5 victory over Oilers alumni.
Leanne Carlson described the outdoor game as having a “fantastic atmosphere,” emphasizing its positive impact on the city. She expressed optimism about showcasing Winnipeg’s attractions and vibrant fan base through the event.
Dan Carlson expressed eagerness to attend the next Heritage Classic at home and predicted a high viewership as the Canadiens’ participation is expected to generate considerable interest in the event.
A past analysis indicated that when the Heritage Classic previously took place in Winnipeg almost a decade ago, it drew 11,000 visitors and contributed approximately $11.2 million in direct tourism spending to the city, as reported by Economic Development Winnipeg Inc. Richard Martin emphasized the significance of the Heritage Classic returning to Winnipeg, highlighting its positive effects on the city’s image and previous successful hosting of major events.
Former Jets goalie Joe Daley praised the upcoming outdoor game as a unifying event for Winnipeg, anticipating an electrifying atmosphere as the city hosts Montreal. He emphasized the nostalgic appeal and communal spirit of outdoor hockey, expressing excitement for the forthcoming matchup and its potential benefits for the local community and sports organization.
