Multiple individuals, including two police officers, sustained injuries in 400 reported collisions in southwestern Ontario due to hazardous road conditions on Wednesday. The inclement weather, characterized by a combination of wet and heavy snowfall and reduced visibility, created perilous driving circumstances overnight and during the morning rush. Meteorologists anticipate further snowfall throughout the evening.
Among the incidents, two police cruisers were rear-ended while officers attended to a separate crash on Highway 403 east of London. Both officers suffered minor injuries and were transported to the hospital, as per authorities.
OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk emphasized the importance of caution on snow-covered and icy roads. He highlighted the legal requirement to slow down and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights. If changing lanes is not feasible, drivers must reduce their speed, Sgt. Sanchuk added, stressing that these precautions are fundamental.
Law enforcement responded to numerous crash scenes across Middlesex, Oxford, Haldimand, and Elgin counties. Several roads, including sections of major highways, were intermittently shut down due to the adverse conditions.
After a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a jackknifed transport trailer on Highway 401 in London, the westbound lanes, closed for approximately two hours between Highbury Avenue and Wellington Road, have been reopened.

Overturned Transport Truck
Earlier in the day, another jackknifed trailer led to the closure of westbound lanes on Highway 401 near Wonderland Road. Meanwhile, on Highway 402 near Glendon Drive in Middlesex County, westbound lanes were closed following an incident where a transport truck transporting vehicles overturned; the situation has since been resolved.
Sgt. Sanchuk issued a series of urgent warnings throughout the morning and early afternoon, urging motorists to reduce their speed.
He emphasized, “We wish to avoid informing families of preventable injuries or fatalities resulting from crashes.”
In addition to the collisions, the severe weather prompted widespread bus cancellations and school closures in rural regions of southwestern Ontario. Authorities also cautioned individuals near bodies of water, warning that falling into frigid water could be fatal within minutes.
Regarding seemingly frozen bodies of water, police stressed that no ice is entirely safe and individuals should assume the risk of falling through, potentially leading to life-threatening situations.
Police also advised caution for snowmobilers, recommending staying on designated trails, wearing appropriate attire, utilizing location technology such as the what3words app for emergency response purposes, and venturing out with a companion.
