“Alberta Launches 8 New License Plate Designs with ‘Strong and Free’ Slogan”

Alberta residents now have the opportunity to select from eight distinct license plate designs as the provincial government announces plans to launch new plates in the coming year. The unveiling of the designs and the voting process through a tournament-style bracket were disclosed during a news conference held on Wednesday afternoon.

All the new designs will incorporate the slogan “Strong and Free,” which represents Alberta’s motto. Premier Danielle Smith emphasized that the inclusion of this motto on the license plates symbolizes Alberta’s strength and independence within Canada.

Residents can participate in the voting process by visiting the province’s website and selecting their preferred design until November 5th. The design options showcase various landscapes, with some featuring pumpjacks and cowboys, reflecting Alberta’s natural beauty and cultural identity.

Smith and Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally addressed queries during the news conference regarding the potential political motivations behind including the motto on the plates. They clarified that the motto is a longstanding provincial phrase that holds significance in both the national anthem and Alberta’s history.

Minister Nally confirmed that no additional funds were allocated for the redesign, with the costs being absorbed within the current budget. The anticipated implementation expenses for the new plates range from $25,000 to $50,000. Despite the update, the new designs will still incorporate the wild rose, maintaining a connection to the current “Wild Rose Country” license plate design.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the province outlined that residents interested in obtaining the new design can voluntarily pay a $28 fee for replacement. Alternatively, individuals can acquire the new plate during their vehicle registration renewal without incurring extra charges. Existing plates can still be used as long as they remain in good condition once the new plates are officially launched.
