“Construction Crane Collides with Thai Train, 32 Dead”

A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern Thailand as a construction crane collided with a moving passenger train, leading to a derailment that claimed the lives of at least 32 individuals and left numerous others injured. The derailment transpired on a section of a high-speed rail project intended to link China with various parts of Southeast Asia.

The crane, utilized in the construction of an elevated railway segment, toppled while the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. Images in Thai media depicted billows of smoke rising above the scene, with construction machinery hanging between concrete support pillars.

Emergency responders were seen atop overturned train carriages, some with significant damage, while fragments of the crane were strewn along the tracks. Medical personnel provided aid to wounded passengers in the aftermath of the incident.

Reports indicated that the train consisted of three carriages, with the rear two sustaining the most severe damage. Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan confirmed that 195 individuals were onboard and announced an inquiry into the incident.

The collapsed elevated section is part of a Thai-Chinese high-speed railway initiative connecting Bangkok to Nong Khai province, which borders Laos. This project, valued at approximately $23 billion Cdn, forms part of a broader plan to enhance connectivity between China and Southeast Asia through the Belt and Road Initiative.

Notably, a similar railway-related mishap occurred in August 2024 when a tunnel collapse in the same province resulted in the deaths of three workers, attributed in part to heavy rainfall during that period.
