Family of Deceased Minneapolis Mother Seeks Justice

Renee Nicole Good’s family has accused U.S. federal immigration officers of causing the death of the Minneapolis mother while she was complying with agents’ instructions. They announced on Wednesday that they have retained the services of the law firm that represented George Floyd’s family to seek clarity and accountability.

In a statement released by Good’s loved ones, they emphasized that Good, aged 37, should be remembered as “a proponent of peace” and called on the public not to exploit her death for political purposes, as conveyed by the Chicago-based firm Romanucci & Blandin. The law firm indicated that it will reveal details from its inquiry in the upcoming weeks.

The family’s choice to engage the law firm coincided with the U.S. Justice Department’s announcement that it finds no grounds to initiate a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. Meanwhile, the FBI continues to investigate Good’s demise.

The Trump administration has supported the actions of the ICE officer, stating that he discharged his weapon in self-defense while positioned in front of Good’s vehicle as it started moving forward. However, this explanation has faced criticism from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and others based on video evidence of the altercation.

This week, roughly six federal prosecutors in Minnesota resigned from their positions, alongside several supervisors in the criminal division of the civil rights section in Washington, according to insider sources.

U.S. prosecutors resign over ICE shooting probe amid push to investigate widow

Six prosecutors resigned Tuesday from the U.S. Attorney General’s office in Minnesota, reports say. The Department of Justice has pushed to investigate the widow of Renee Good, the woman killed by an ICE agent last week, and has appeared reluctant to investigate the shooter.

Romanucci & Blandin mentioned that Good’s family seeks clarity regarding the federal operation conducted on Jan. 7 in the neighborhood where Good was fatally shot, the conduct of the officers during the encounter, and the delays in providing medical assistance post the shooting. The identity of the ICE agent who fired the fatal shot remains undisclosed.

According to the law firm, Good’s partner, Becca Good, and other family members mentioned that they had just dropped off their six-year-old child at school and had paused to observe the law enforcement activities when officers approached them.

The attorneys stated that Renee Nicole Good seemed to have reversed and redirected her vehicle away from an agent before the shooting occurred, although there has been no official report from investigators.
