A young boy, identified as Liam Conejo Ramos, was involved in a distressing incident upon returning home from preschool with his father in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. According to school officials, the five-year-old, clad in a blue tuque and carrying a Spider-Man backpack, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in their driveway.
Superintendent Zena Stenvik of Columbia Heights Public Schools described the situation as the child being utilized as a lure while federal officers pursued his father. Despite pleas from another adult present at the scene to allow them to care for the child, the agents proceeded to take the boy out of the running vehicle, escorted him to the door, and instructed him to knock, using him as a means to ascertain if anyone else was home.
Subsequently, Liam and his father were transferred to the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in Dilley, Texas, as confirmed by their lawyer, Marc Prokosch. Concerns were raised over the detention of children and families seeking asylum, with Prokosch condemning it as inhumane and unacceptable.
The incident took place in the context of heightened immigration enforcement in Minneapolis, where tensions have escalated following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by ICE agents. Department of Homeland Security assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin maintained that ICE did not target the child but was executing a focused operation to apprehend Liam’s father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, described as an undocumented individual from Ecuador.
Vice-President JD Vance reiterated the stance that ICE agents took custody of the child due to the father’s actions of fleeing the scene. The authorities emphasized that parents are given the choice to be removed with their children or have them placed under the care of a designated guardian.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz denounced the reported detainment of the child, labeling it as part of a retaliatory campaign by the Trump administration. School officials revealed that Liam was one of several students from their district who had been detained by ICE agents in recent weeks, including a 17-year-old high school student and a 10-year-old with her mother.
The situation has sparked public outcry and demands for clarity on the treatment of children in immigration enforcement activities. The Department of Homeland Security’s response did not address the specific outcome for Liam post-arrest, leaving unanswered questions about the welfare of the affected minors.
