ICE’s recruitment drive on social media is drawing attention due to its use of language and imagery that resonate with far-right groups. The posts, featuring patriotic themes, have raised concerns among experts who see connections to extremist ideologies. Analysts, like Hannah Gais from the Southern Poverty Law Centre, have noted references in the posts that seem to appeal to white nationalists and neo-Nazis.
The recruitment push by ICE, which has significantly expanded under President Trump, includes references that echo sentiments from controversial sources. For instance, a post with Uncle Sam at a crossroads asking, “Which way, American man?” mirrors a meme popular among right-wing influencers. This phrase is derived from an antisemitic book by William Gayley Simpson, favored by white supremacists.
Other posts by ICE have sparked controversy, such as using the slogan “America for Americans” and referencing a white supremacist anthem. These messages have drawn criticism for potentially attracting extremists to join ICE. While ICE denies any ties to white supremacist material, critics like Heidi Beirich caution against the agency inadvertently attracting racial extremists.
Despite the backlash, ICE’s recruitment efforts have been successful, with a significant increase in new officers hired. The agency’s recruitment strategy includes targeted advertising and outreach to specific demographic groups. However, concerns persist about the type of individuals being drawn to ICE, with some experts warning about the potential risks of recruiting those with extremist ideologies.
