Colombian Congressman Among 15 Dead in Plane Crash

A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday in a remote part of Norte de Santander province in northeastern Colombia as a small plane crashed, claiming the lives of all 15 occupants, including a congressman. The aircraft, operated by Satena, a government-owned airline, went down in an area near Curasica, prompting a swift response from rescue teams to evaluate the situation.

Following the location of the plane, Colombian authorities confirmed the devastating news that there were no survivors. The flight had departed from Cucuta airport en route to Ocana, a mountainous municipality, with the journey typically lasting around 40 minutes. The final communication between the plane and air traffic control was shortly after takeoff.

While the cause of the crash remains unknown, an investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances. Among the passengers was Diogènes Quintero, a 36-year-old member of the House of Representatives representing Catatumbo, renowned for his advocacy work in the border region with Venezuela, where the accident occurred.

Quintero, a lawyer by profession, was elected in 2022 to represent the victims of Colombia’s prolonged armed conflict as part of a special initiative established under a significant peace agreement in 2016. His political party, U Party, mourned his passing, highlighting his dedication to public service and regional development.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending his condolences to the families of the victims. The loss of Quintero and the other passengers has left a profound impact on the nation, with many mourning the sudden and tragic end to their lives.
