The men’s Olympic biathlon bronze medalist in the 20-kilometer individual race made a surprising confession during a post-race interview at the Milan Cortina Games. Sturla Holm Laegreid, a prominent Norwegian biathlete, disclosed on live television that he had cheated on his girlfriend, expressing deep regret for his actions.

Laegreid, who secured third place in the competition, emotionally revealed his infidelity, stating, “Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful, sweetest person. And three months ago I made the biggest mistake of my life and cheated on her.” He disclosed that he had informed his partner about the incident a week prior.

Despite his athletic achievement, Laegreid expressed his remorse and solely focused on seeking forgiveness from his partner. He acknowledged the potential change in public perception but emphasized his commitment to his relationship, saying, “I’m not quite sure what I’m trying to say by saying this now, but sport has taken a back seat in recent days. I wish I could share this with her.”

Laegreid’s teammate, Johan-Olav Botn, clinched the gold medal with flawless shooting in his Olympic debut. Eric Perrot of France secured the silver medal, with Laegreid taking the bronze after missing one target. This marked Laegreid’s first individual Olympic medal, having previously won gold as part of the relay team at the Beijing Olympics.

Following the race, Laegreid was visibly distraught, shedding tears and seeking solace from friends. In a press conference, he explained his decision to disclose his personal turmoil on live television, stating, “It was the choice I made. We make different choices during our life and that’s how we make life.” Expressing his emotional turmoil, he hoped that his confession would convey the depth of his feelings to his partner.

Concerned about overshadowing his teammate’s victory, Laegreid expressed regret for potentially detracting from Botn’s achievement, admitting, “Maybe it was really selfish of me to give that interview. I’m not really here, mentally.”
