“Russian Attacks on Ukrainian Power Grids Heighten Tensions Ahead of Peace Talks”

Russian forces launched attacks on Ukrainian power facilities before new peace talks, resulting in the death of three energy workers and leaving many without power and heat. The U.S.-supported negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow in Geneva coincided with the upcoming anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2018. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the strikes on 12 Ukrainian regions just before the talks, emphasizing the need for diplomacy supported by strength and justice.

The ongoing conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has seen repeated attacks on Ukrainian energy installations this winter, causing widespread disruptions. The recent strikes led to significant damage to power infrastructure, particularly affecting Odesa, a key Black Sea port city. Repair efforts are expected to be prolonged, with homes in multiple regions experiencing power cuts and disruptions to heating services.

In response to the attacks, Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting and downing numerous drones and missiles launched by Russia, although some targets were hit. The Ukrainian military also confirmed a strike on Russia’s Ilsky oil refinery, igniting a fire at one of the largest oil facilities in southern Russia.

The Geneva peace talks, mediated by the U.S., focus on resolving the territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia, with U.S. President Donald Trump urging both parties to reach a resolution to end the ongoing conflict. Zelenskyy called for increased pressure on Russia by allies to secure a fair and genuine peace agreement through stricter sanctions and military support for Ukraine.

The negotiations also address critical issues such as the control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the potential deployment of Western troops in postwar Ukraine. The talks involve delegations led by key figures from both sides, with expectations for progress remaining uncertain. The venue for the talks has shifted to Geneva following previous rounds hosted in Abu Dhabi earlier in the year.
