The head coach of the Swift Current Broncos has stepped down following a probe by the Western Hockey League that revealed violations of the league’s conduct standards. Dean DeSilva resigned as head coach on Friday after the WHL imposed a five-game suspension on him and fined the team $10,000. The league found that DeSilva had breached its conduct standards in two on-ice incidents while administering player discipline.
WHL commissioner Dan Near emphasized the league’s commitment to accountability and maintaining consistent conduct standards for all members, including players, coaches, and executives. DeSilva’s suspension began on Nov. 5 and concluded on Nov. 11, leading to his resignation on Nov. 14 as announced by Broncos general manager Chad Leslie, who stated that the decision was mutually agreed upon for the best interests of both parties.
This development comes after the Swift Current Broncos and their former head coach, Devan Praught, also parted ways two years ago following a similar incident where Praught received a five-game suspension for allegedly violating the WHL conduct standards.
In a separate announcement, the WHL disclosed the suspension of Peter Anholt, the general manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, along with a $10,000 fine for the team. Anholt was found to have engaged in intimidating behavior and language during a post-game speech to players after a loss to Edmonton in October. Anholt expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging that his conduct fell short of expectations and pledging to uphold higher standards in the future.
Both investigations into DeSilva and Anholt were initiated based on tips received through the WHL Respect Line, an anonymous reporting hotline. Anholt is set to resume his duties on Nov. 26 after serving his suspension.
