“Canada Battles Brazil in Davis Cup Qualifiers in Vancouver”

Vancouver is set to be the venue for Canada’s initial face-off against Brazil in the Davis Cup Qualifiers, as per an announcement by Tennis Canada on Thursday. The competition, featuring a best-of-five format, is scheduled for Feb. 6-7 at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre located on the University of British Columbia campus.

The victorious team will progress to the second phase of qualifying for the international men’s tournament, slated for September 2026. Canada, ranked ninth, will confront Brazil, ranked 18th, with the former having triumphed in 10 out of their last 12 home ties. The last encounter between the two nations occurred in 2007 during the Group I Americas stage, where Brazil emerged victorious with a 3-1 scoreline.

Canada has a successful track record in Vancouver, securing victories in their last three Davis Cup ties, notably defeating Spain and Italy en route to the semifinals in 2013 and prevailing over Japan 3-2 in 2015. The team earned a spot in the 2026 qualifiers following a resounding 4-0 win against Israel in World Group I play in September, a match that took place in an empty venue amidst protests against Israel’s activities in Gaza and the West Bank.

In 2022, Canada clinched its sole Davis Cup title by defeating Australia in the final. However, subsequent losses to Germany in the 2024 quarterfinals and Hungary in the first round of 2025 qualifying led to their relegation to the qualifying pool for the current tournament.
