Elana Meyers Taylor Claims Historic Olympic Gold

Elana Meyers Taylor’s two young sons witnessed her jubilant celebration as she clinched her long-awaited Olympic victory. The 41-year-old American bobsledder, a mother of two special-needs children, overcame obstacles such as concussions and doubt to secure her sixth career medal and first Olympic gold in the monobob event at the Milan-Cortina Games.

Expressing her disbelief at her achievement from Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, Meyers Taylor remarked, “I thought it was impossible.” However, her perseverance paid off as she became the oldest American woman to claim an Olympic gold medal in Winter Games history. With a final heat rally, Meyers Taylor triumphed with a total time of three minutes 57.93 seconds over four runs across two days.

Laura Nolte of Germany finished second with a time of 3:57.97, while Kaillie Humphries Armbruster of the U.S. took the bronze at 3:58.05. Nolte, despite initial disappointment, acknowledged Meyers Taylor’s deserving victory, highlighting her kindness and previous silver wins. Humphries Armbruster, a former Canadian Olympian who now competes for the U.S., made history by winning gold in the inaugural monobob event at Beijing 2022, becoming the first woman to achieve this feat for two different countries.

Meyers Taylor and Humphries Armbruster, both seasoned competitors with five Olympic medals each, maintained their flawless record by medaling in all five of their Olympic appearances. Melissa Lotholz finished sixth, and Cynthia Appiah placed 13th for Canada, utilizing older sleds due to budget constraints compared to the well-funded German team.

Canadian bobsledders have consistently medaled since 2006, with Cynthia Appiah securing a silver in Winterburg, Germany, earlier in the season. Despite financial challenges and revised goals emphasizing process over outcomes, the Canadian team continues to strive for success at the Milano-Cortina Olympics.

In the two-man bobsled event, Germany dominated the first two runs, with Johannes Lochner and Georg Fleischhauer leading the pack. Canada’s top sled, piloted by Taylor Austin and brakeman Shaq Murray-Lawrence, finished 15th, while Jay Dearborn and Mike Evelyn placed 22nd. The competition continues with heats 3 and 4 on Tuesday.

The pursuit of excellence and resilience were evident at the Milan-Cortina Olympics as athletes like Elana Meyers Taylor and Kaillie Humphries Armbruster showcased their determination and talent on the world stage.
