Surrey police reported that Kap’s Cafe, owned by Indian celebrity Kapil Sharma, was targeted by gunshots for the third time in the Newton area of the city. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. PT, with the cafe sustaining damage but fortunately, no injuries were reported.
While the Surrey Police Service (SPS) has not officially confirmed the motive behind the shootings, it is suspected to be linked to extortion. Ian MacDonald, a spokesperson for the SPS, mentioned that the department, along with the Provincial Extortion Task Force, is investigating the previous incidents targeting Kap’s Cafe.
The cafe first faced gunshots in July shortly after its opening, followed by another shooting in August. MacDonald highlighted that a video circulating online shows multiple shots fired at the cafe from a vehicle window. Additionally, claims by individuals associated with the Bishnoi gang have surfaced regarding the recent attack.
The situation surrounding Kap’s Cafe has raised concerns among locals, with Mike Grieve expressing sadness over the repeated targeting of the establishment. The community is rallying together, acknowledging the challenges and risks associated with such incidents becoming a “new normal” in the city.
Despite the unsettling events, businesses like Brown Blendz Barbershop, located next to Kap’s Cafe, continue to operate. Aman Singh, a barber at the shop, emphasized the need to carry on with daily activities despite the prevailing circumstances. Singh also praised the friendly nature of the cafe’s staff, who often share treats and coffee with neighboring businesses.
B.C. Conservative MLA Harman Bhangu echoed community sentiments, urging authorities to take decisive action against the escalating violence. He emphasized the need for enhanced security measures, including more surveillance cameras in the area.
According to MacDonald, there have been 65 reported extortion-related cases and 35 connected shootings in Surrey this year, predominantly impacting South Asian communities. The police are actively seeking information related to the Kap’s Cafe shootings and encourage individuals with relevant footage to come forward.
