The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) has initiated an investigation following an altercation between coaching staff during a U13 game in Lakeshore, Ont., that took place on Sunday. The game involved the Riverside Rangers and Belle River Canadiens.
In response to the incident, the OMHA stated that the matter is currently under review, and all bench staff from both teams have been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing. The association emphasized that such situations have no place in minor hockey and do not align with its values.
A video posted on LiveBarn, an ice rink streaming service, captured the coaching staff gathering near one of the benches after the game, leading to a physical altercation with punches thrown in the presence of players.
The Belle River Canadiens expressed their disappointment on Facebook, stating that the actions witnessed do not represent the values or expectations of their members in the Belle River District Minor Hockey.
Anne Marie Schofield, President of the Riverside Minor Hockey Association, declined to provide a comment to CBC News due to the ongoing investigation by the OMHA.
Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey conveyed personal disappointment over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable in the community, especially among adults who serve as role models for young athletes. Bailey mentioned plans to remind user groups about the facility’s code of conduct and highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety of all users, visitors, and staff.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Bailey acknowledged that such altercations are not typical in minor hockey and expressed hope that the positive work being done by individuals involved in Lakeshore youth sports continues to shine. The game concluded with the Riverside Rangers winning 6-5.
