The Star Blanket Cree Nation community recently witnessed the return of bison to their lands after many years. Residents, including men, women, and children, gathered to witness the arrival of a new bison herd, marking a significant day for their nation. Sharon Strongarm, who attended the release with her grandchildren, expressed the emotional significance of the event, emphasizing the spiritual connection to their heritage. The initiative to reintroduce bison was inspired by Ariane Starblanket’s late grandfather, a former chief of the community, who believed it would bring healing and enhance food sovereignty.
The project, led by Starblanket as the community navigator and project manager, aimed to engage youth and promote cultural restoration. The youth in the community were actively involved in caring for the bison, fostering a sense of connection to the land and heritage. The arrival of the bison was met with profound emotions, with community members experiencing a sense of healing and joy during the event.
Tristan Starr-Desnomie, one of the chosen bison keepers, expressed his honor in taking on the responsibility, highlighting the unique experience of caring for bison compared to other animals. As the bison settled into their new home, caretakers like Austin Elliott observed their behavior and expressed gratitude for being part of this generational activity.
Looking ahead, the community anticipates the bison herd to expand and eventually provide essential resources like food and clothing. The reintroduction of bison is seen as a vital step in empowering the community and educating the younger generation about the significance of these animals in their culture and history.
