Olha Zolotkova arrived in Winnipeg shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 without knowing English. Today, she is establishing her own business in the Exchange District showroom, expressing excitement and a bit of concern but overall feeling happy about the newfound freedom and opportunity to start afresh.
Initially, Zolotkova’s career in Ukraine spanned roles as a teacher, principal, and textbook editor. Her journey to entrepreneurship in Canada began during a summer break from her educational assistant job at a Winnipeg school when she decided to launch By Zola. This online store and appointment-based clothing boutique cater to plus-size women, a market gap she identified during her shopping experiences in Winnipeg.
Zolotkova remains optimistic about the reception of the clothing lines she is introducing, balancing her passion for education with her newfound creative venture. The influx of nearly 30,000 Ukrainians in Manitoba since February 2022 has spurred a wave of entrepreneurial initiatives. Mila Shykota, another Ukrainian newcomer, established the Ukrainian Guide to Winnipeg, an online platform showcasing businesses started by Ukrainian immigrants and vendors offering Ukrainian products.
Vitaliy Lebezun, vice-president of Warkentin Business Solutions, has been guiding Ukrainian arrivals in Manitoba on business startup requirements and self-employment regulations. He anticipates a continuous stream of aspiring entrepreneurs seeking opportunities in Manitoba, drawing from the experience of both established business owners and individuals pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams for the first time.
Yuliia Okhrimenko and her husband, Serhii, marked the first anniversary of KoloShop, their Ukrainian gift store within House of Local, offering a variety of products crafted by fellow Ukrainian expatriates. The couple’s initiative aims to support those who fled Ukraine due to the war by providing a platform to sell their creations and generate income. For Yuliia and Serhii, KoloShop embodies a sense of community and solidarity among Ukrainians in Winnipeg, creating a supportive environment for those navigating the challenges of building a new life away from their homeland.
As Zolotkova continues to navigate her personal and professional journey in Canada, her focus remains on growing her business as an integral part of establishing roots in Manitoba. The uncertain future in Ukraine complicates her decision to stay or return, highlighting the complex emotions tied to building a new life while cherishing memories of the past.
