WestJet Adds $60 Fee to Companion Vouchers Amid Fuel Price Surge

WestJet to Impose Additional Fee on Companion Voucher Bookings Due to Soaring Fuel Prices

WestJet will introduce a $60 surcharge on companion voucher reservations in response to the surge in fuel costs. The airline’s companion voucher program, a perk for WestJet RBC Mastercard holders, allows them to bring a second passenger at a reduced fare for a round trip.

The temporary surcharge will be effective starting April 8, with bookings made prior to this date remaining unaffected. WestJet stated that the fee will be in place until fuel prices stabilize amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has led to a significant increase in jet fuel prices.

In an email to customers, WestJet explained that the surcharge aims to offset the impact of rising fuel prices, which are a major component of airline operating expenses. The airline highlighted the need for this measure as companion vouchers do not offer the same pricing flexibility as regular airfares.

Additionally, WestJet is adjusting its flight schedule to cope with higher fuel expenses. This includes consolidating flights on less popular routes and modifying seasonal travel periods. The airline has reduced capacity by approximately one percent in April and three percent in May, with most affected passengers receiving alternative travel arrangements on the same day as their original departure.

According to Wayne Smith, a hospitality and tourism professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, Canadian airlines, including WestJet, are facing financial challenges due to the fuel shortage. He emphasized the substantial fuel consumption of airplanes and the necessity for airlines to cover increasing fuel costs to remain operational.

Smith highlighted the significant rise in fuel expenses for specific flights, such as a Boeing 787-9 trip from Vancouver to Hong Kong, which saw a $40,000 increase in fuel costs within a month. He suggested that additional surcharges may be implemented by other airlines, and passengers should anticipate fuller flights due to WestJet’s consolidation efforts.

The aviation expert also noted the financial struggles airlines face, mentioning potential increases in baggage fees and other surcharges as part of survival strategies in the current economic climate.
