Riverview resident Eric Michaud recalls a humorous yet unexpected incident involving Azizi, the male lion at the Moncton zoo, who playfully sprayed visitors with urine over the fence. Michaud’s wife and daughter were among those caught in the lion’s playful act, causing laughter and surprise among onlookers.
Having visited the Magnetic Hill Zoo for 15 years, Michaud expressed sadness upon hearing about Azizi’s recent euthanasia due to age-related health issues. Zoo director Selina Cowman mentioned that Azizi, an 18-year-old lion, was receiving specialized care for ailments like arthritis and scoliosis.
Describing Azizi as a laid-back lion who enjoyed the company of his female counterpart, Amara, Michaud shared how the lion attempted the urine prank on his family twice, but they were prepared the second time, thwarting his playful antics.
Meanwhile, Fredericton resident Roslyn Sambles, who has been visiting the zoo since 2009, fondly remembered Azizi and Amara as cubs. She tearfully expressed her sorrow over Azizi’s passing, praising his strength and gentle nature towards Amara.
Sambles recounted a touching moment from last summer when she observed Azizi struggling to approach Amara, interpreting their interactions as a loving exchange between aging companions.
With concerns for Amara’s well-being now that she is alone, Cowman assured that the lioness, who is of similar age to Azizi and in good health, is being closely monitored. The zoo currently has no immediate plans to introduce another lion.
Reflecting on Azizi’s legacy at the zoo, Cowman emphasized the emotional impact of his passing on the staff, particularly those who had cared for him over the years. The focus now lies on ensuring Amara’s continued care and well-being.
